Summary
- The Ice Golem is the eighth Dark Elixir Troop unlocked once the Dark Barracks is upgraded to level 8, which requires Town Hall level 11. He is a slow-moving ground troop with low damage and high hitpoints that prioritizes defenses.
- Ice Golems are powerful tanking units with low damage but high hitpoints for the housing space they occupy. Their attacks slow down whatever they attack, reducing affected Defensive Buildings or units' fire rate by 50% for 2 seconds. Upon death, the Ice Golem freezes everything in a large radius, completely immobilizing any defenses and enemy units caught within. However, the upon death freeze does not deal any damage.
- An Ice Golem's death freeze will not prevent Traps from triggering nor will it stop a triggering Trap from going off. (The Trap however, will appear as if it were being hit by the Ice Golem).
- Ice Golems prioritize defensive structures above all other targets, and will bypass all other types of enemy buildings and troops while any defenses remain on the battlefield. This is true even if they are under attack by enemy Clan Castle troops, heroes or Skeleton Trap skeletons. Note that like all troops that prioritize defenses, Ice Golems do not consider the Clan Castle to be a defense regardless of whether or not it contains enemy troops, but do consider the defending Grand Warden and the activated Town Hall weapon (if any) to be defensive buildings.
Once all defenses are destroyed, Ice Golems become like any other troop with no preferred target; they will attack the nearest building to them regardless of type, and will turn and attack enemy units if they become aware of any nearby and can fight back against them. However, they will not switch targets to enemy units until their previous target was destroyed.
Strategies
Offensive Strategies
- Ice Golems are very strong tanking units compared to other high-hitpoint units because they have good health for their housing space, have two special abilities (slowing defenses he attacks and freezing everything in a radius of 7.5 tiles when destroyed for a few seconds) and only take up 15 housing space. Their freeze effect stops high damage defenses from attacking for a while and lets other units destroy important buildings.
- The freeze is best used with high DPS troops or Heroes. The Ice Golem is not a good long-lasting tank, though, due to the somewhat low HP for an entire base.
- He can be paired well with the Bat Spell, because the Bats help to deal the damage, and the Ice golem tanks for the Bats and the Freeze helps the Bats tackle Splash defenses easier.
- If you are not using a Queen Charge (Archer Queen supported by five Healers), then using an Ice Golem to freeze up the area before deploying a lone Archer Queen can almost completely destroy a small compartment.
- You can use Ice Golems to tank for ground Siege Machines, such as Log Launchers to allow them to get a lot of value.
- Since the Ice Golems do small amounts of damage themselves, it's important that they are backed up by high damage-dealing troops, like Wizards or Witches, Bowlers, or the Archer Queen. For example, a popular strategy in TH11 is Ice Golem BoWitch, which uses Ice Golems to tank Witches and Bowlers.
- The Ice Golem can effectively counter a single-target Inferno Tower. When the Ice Golem dies, he will freeze it, resetting its damage ramp-up, and allowing other troops to take the Inferno Tower out.
- However, make sure that the Ice Golem's death freeze affects the Inferno Tower, otherwise it will continue attacking as normal.
- You need to make sure to fully utilize the freeze. If there is a large amount of high DPS buildings near the Ice Golem's target, consider bringing a lesser tank like a Giant to allow him to get to where it needs to freeze. One can also consider placing the Ice Golem in a Siege Machine, such as the Wall Wrecker or Battle Blimp, to get it into the core of a base. This allows the opposing Town Hall weapon to be frozen, as well as other core defenses, making for an easy path to the center for your other troops
Defensive Strategy
- Ice Golems, which are similar to Giants, Golems, and Lava Hounds, are very high-health units that can be used to soak up damage. Make sure that the Ice Golem is in the middle or in range of most of your defenses, as the Ice Golem can distract attacking troops very effectively for a considerable amount of time. Even when overwhelmed, the Ice Golem freezes any remaining attackers for a few seconds.
- Ice Golems can prove to be a valuable defensive troop in Clan Castles. Not only can he soak up damage so that other troops can attack behind his cover, when he does die, the resulting freeze will also stall the attacker's troops or Heroes for some time, allowing both Clan Castle troops and defenses to quickly pile damage onto them. However, his freeze effect is weaker when defending, having less area of effect while also lasting for a much shorter duration than when the Ice Golem is used for attacking, so keep that in mind when using an Ice Golem for defending.
- Also, if the base is well-designed, the attacker may time fail.
- The Ice Golem can be bounced off the map by a Level 4 or higher Spring Trap. If you want to use Spring Traps to defeat them, place them in a location where his death freeze will not be able to affect many important defenses, such as an entrance to an outer compartment.
Upgrade Differences
The Ice Golem undergoes minor visual changes at levels 3, 5 and 7.
- Initially, the Ice Golem is a large four-legged creature made out of snow with some parts of his body being composed of thick segments of ice. He has glowing blue eyes. The icy parts of his body are mostly concentrated on his arms, hands and head.
- At level 3, the segments closest to the hands turn a darker blue, and the feet turn to an icy blue.
- At level 5, the upper body segment turns to a darker blue and gets a little bit bigger.
- At level 7, the face gets an extra piece of ice. There is also a beard made with ice.
- At level 8, his shoulders gain two ice spikes.

Trivia
- The word "Golem" occurs once in the Bible in Psalm 139:16, which uses the word "golmi", that means "my light form", "raw" material, connoting the unfinished human being. A golem is an animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore, which is entirely created from inanimate matter, usually clay or mud. The most famous golem narrative involves Loew ben Bezalel, the late 16th-century rabbi of Prague.
- You can have a maximum of 21 Ice Golems at one time in a complete set of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 24 if you include 3 that can fit into a level 9 or higher Clan Castle. On the battlefield, you can clone an additional 8 Ice Golems with four level 5 or higher Clone Spells (three from the regular spell inventory and one from a level 10 or higher Clan Castle), for a total of 32 Ice Golems.
- The Ice Golem is inspired by the Clash Royale troop of the same name. Aside from having a slightly different appearance and is bigger than his Clash Royale counterpart like the standard Golem, he freezes enemy units and defenses completely upon death, rather than dealing slight damage and merely slowing them down.
- The Ice Golem is 1 of 9 troops to be featured as a monster in the game Squad Busters. The others are the P.E.K.K.A, Wall Breaker, Minion, Skeleton, Lava Hound, Bowler, Baby Dragon, Ice Golem, and Yeti.
- The Ice Golem in Squad Busters resembles the Ice Golem in Clash Royale.
- The Ice Golem's death sound is not unique, as he shares a similar death sound with the Giant. However, his other sounds (when being deployed and attacking) are unique.
- When an Ice Golem disappears upon death or at the end of a battle, he explodes into regular Elixir, despite being a Dark Elixir Troop.
- If the Ice Golem is the last unit that is defeated, he will not freeze his surroundings.
Comparisons
- He is one of two troops to have different stats when used defensively rather than offensively, the other being the Miner (the Miner moves slower on defense and does not burrow).
- The Ice Golem and the Miner are the only troops that have visual changes every 2 levels, as most of the troops don't have much of a visual change.
- The Ice Golem is one of the four troops associated with ice, the others are the Ice Hound, Ice Pup, and Ice Wizard.
- The Ice Golem, along with the Healer, Miner, Electro Dragon, Yeti, Dragon Rider, Golem, Headhunter, Apprentice Warden, Root Rider, and Druid are the only troops that don't have a Builder Base Troop or Super Troop counterpart.
