Summary

Opening Treasure Chests

  • After a Treasure Chest is won, players will be taken to an interface where they can open their newly acquired chest.
  • Treasure Chests are divided into four rarities: Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Each Chest initially appears as a Common Chest, and requires four taps (or clicks) to open, represented by the hammer icons directly underneath the chest. Each of the first three hits has a chance to upgrade the Chest's rarity; these hence determine the rarity of the Chest that is opened. The fourth hit always opens the chest to give the player the rewards inside.

Possible Rewards

Available Types by Rarity

  • The rewards that are possible from a Treasure Chest depend on its rarity. The below table shows which rewards are possible from each chest rarity:

Magic Snacks

  • Magic Snacks can be won only from Common Chests, and only at Town Hall 3 and above.
  • Each Common Chest that contains a Magic Snack contains one such snack. When claimed, the Magic Snack is immediately added to the Temporary Storage, where it expires after 24 hours if not used.
  • The Builder Bite, Study Soup and Power Pancakes can all be won at Town Hall 3 and above. The Clan Castle Cake can only be received at Town Hall 4 and above, while the Mighty Morsel can only be received at Town Hall 7 and above.

Resources

  • Resources can be won from Common and Rare Chests.
  • The amount won from each chest is randomly determined when resources are selected to be won, and depends on the rarity of the chest.
  • For Home Village resources (Gold, Elixir and Dark Elixir), they scale based on Town Hall level; additionally Dark Elixir can only be won at Town Hall 7 and above.
  • For Builder Base resources (Builder Gold and Builder Elixir), they can only be won if the player has a Builder Base, and scale by Builder Hall level. By extension this requires Town Hall 4 to unlock the Builder Base.
  • Capital Gold can be won at Town Hall 6 and above, the minimum Town Hall level required to unlock the Clan Capital. Note that Capital Gold can be won regardless of whether or not the player is in a Clan. Raid Medals cannot be won from Treasure Chests.
  • In all cases, the rewards can be claimed in full as long as the player's storage is not overfilled (i.e. not full, or completely full without overflow). If the player's storage is overfilled before claiming the reward, then the resource reward is completely lost.
    • If a resource reward from a Treasure Chest causes the player's storage to overflow, then the player will be warned about this.
  • The below tables show the range of possible amounts of resources that can be won:

Magic Items

  • Magic Items can be won from Rare, Epic and Legendary Chests.
  • Each rarity of chest has a different selection of possible Magic Items.
  • Many Magic Items can only be won at certain Town Hall levels; for example, the Super Potion can only be received at Town Hall 11 and above.
  • Magic Items pertaining to the Builder Base do not require the Builder Base to be unlocked.
  • If a claimed Magic Item cannot fit in the player's storage, then it will instead be added to the Temporary Storage, where a 24-hour grace period is given for the player to make room for it by using or selling existing Magic Items. Once this is done, the Magic Item will automatically be added to the normal Magic Item storage, otherwise the unclaimed Magic Item will be sold for gems.

Ores

  • Ores can be won from Rare and Epic Chests at Town Hall 8 and above. All three Ore types are available in both rarities of chests.
  • Like with Resources, the amount of Ores won depends on both Town Hall level and also the rarity of the chest.
  • The same rules with regards to claiming Ores in the case of overflowing storages applies to Ores; they can only be claimed if the Ore storage (controlled by Blacksmith level) is not overfilled.

Chest Probabilities

  • The probability of getting chests of different rarities is obviously not equal. The below table lists the chances of obtaining each given rarity of chest:
Chest Rarity Probability
Common 58%
Rare 32%
Epic 8%
Legendary 2%
  • Given that a specified rarity was obtained, the odds of getting each possible item type is also not equal. To calculate the odds of obtaining a specific item, one can use the below weight system.
  • In this weight system, every possible item is assigned a positive weight value, representing the relative odds that that item is selected. The probability that an item is obtained is calculated by taking that item's weight and dividing it by the sum of the weights of all possible items in that chest. For example, if an item A has weight 10, and the total weight of all possible items is 20, then the chance of getting item A is 10/20 = 50%.
  • Note that an item's weight is only considered if the player is eligible to win said item; if the player cannot win that item (e.g. because they do not meet the Town Hall requirements), then its weight is ignored, i.e. not counted. For example, the weight of Dark Elixir is ignored if the player is below Town Hall 7.
  • The below tables list the weights of each possible item in each rarity of chest. Some items, in italics, are item "categories" that have further rules in determining the odds of getting individual items, which are detailed below these tables.
  • Supercell has also released explicitly calculated probabilities of obtaining each item, accessible through this link: https://support.supercell.com/clash-of-clans/en/articles/chest-drop-chances.html.

Special Probability Rules

Magic Snacks

  • If Magic Snacks have been selected in Common Chests, then each Magic Snack that can be received is equally likely.
  • Because there are 3-5 different Magic Snacks that the player can receive depending on their Town Hall level, their individual weights are not explicitly listed in the above tables.
  • Given this information, the effective weight of each individual Magic Snack will range between 2.4 and 4.

Decorations

  • A similar logic applies to when Decorations are selected in Epic chests; each such item in the pool is equally likely. The number of items remaining in the pool has no effect on the overall weight of the category, except if there are no items left in the pool (in which case the category's weight is discarded).
    • Thus, for example, all else being equal, it is equally likely for a player with one Decoration left in the pool to get a Decoration, as it is for a player with ten Decorations left.

Clan House Parts

  • Clan House parts follow the same logic as Decorations, but there is one additional remark: for Clan House parts, the type of Clan House part (whether it is a roof, wall, ground or decoration) has no effect on the probabilities of each Clan House part.
    • Because there are disproportionately more roofs than there are other house parts, a player with none of the Clan House parts in the available pool will be very likely to get a roof if they get a Clan House part.
    • This reward type, usually found in Epic Chests, will not be available if the player does not have a Clan, which increases the chance of getting other items instead, such as a Book of Spells.

Hero Skins

  • For Hero Skins, the game first selects a Hero that the player has (or can unlock at their Town Hall and Builder Hall levels) to receive a skin. Only Heroes which have at least one available skin in the pool are considered for this calculation, and each such Hero is equally likely to be selected.
    • For example, consider a Town Hall 11 player with no Builder Base and no Hero Skins unlocked. When they win a Hero Skin, the game selects between the Barbarian King, Archer Queen, and Grand Warden to receive a skin. If they were to have obtained all Grand Warden skins, however, then the game would only select between the Barbarian King and Archer Queen.
    • If the player owns all the Hero Skins, they will not be available in that Chest and will instead choose a different reward such as Hammers or Hero Equipment.
  • Once a Hero is selected, then a skin from that Hero is randomly selected, each being equally likely to be selected.
    • Because different Heroes may have different numbers of skins available in the pool, the probability of getting skins belonging to different Heroes may be unequal.

Hero Equipment

  • Individual pieces of Hero Equipment are equally likely to be selected, like Decorations and Clan House parts. However, there is one key difference: Hero Equipment is only added to the pool if the Hero using it is unlocked (or can be unlocked) by the player at their Town Hall level.
    • For example, the Fireball (equipment for the Grand Warden) is not added to the pool of available equipment until the player reaches Town Hall 11.

Chest Loot Calculator

The following calculator generates loot tables, or probabilities of getting individual items in a Treasure Chest. Each table contains all items of a given rarity.

To use the calculator, change the inputs below as desired, and click the "Get Tables" button to generate the loot tables. Depending on the selected Town Hall level, various checklists will be made available. Each checklist contains items that can only be obtained once; checking off items that are already owned removes them from the loot tables.

The output comprises a list of items and two calculated probabilities for each item:

  • The Conditional Chance is the probability that the item is obtained, provided that a chest of that rarity has been obtained.
  • The Overall Chance is the probability that the item is obtained overall (ignoring the rarity of the chest).

Underlined items denote item categories; they can be clicked on to expand the category to show probabilities for individual items within the category.
