Summary
- The X-Bow is a single-target, rapid-firing defense that is unlocked at Builder Hall 10. It attacks by shooting blue Elixir at units from a long range.
- It can be configured to two modes - Ground Mode, which can only target ground troops, or Air Mode, which can only target air units. Unlike the Home Village rendition, the X-Bow has the same range in both modes, at 12 tiles.
- Unlike the regular X-Bow from the Home Village, it does not need to be reloaded after a defense.
Strategies
Defensive Strategy
- The X-Bow's major niche is its very long range - second only to the Lava Launcher (which has a considerable blind spot). This makes up for its relatively low damage per second, and makes it an excellent tool to deny Cannon Carts, Beta Minions or the Battle Copter from safely picking off buildings, depending on the mode it is set to. It can be placed in the center of the base to enable it to cover as much of the base as possible, or as a frontline defense to deter long-range attacks on one side.
- If deployed on the frontline to take out long-range troops, you can block off the X-Bow with high-hitpoint non-defensive buildings. This gives the X-Bow as much time as possible to fire upon said troops, making it difficult for them to get value.
- The X-Bow should be placed in the second stage of the Builder Base when designing a base. This is to avoid enemy attacks tailoring their army to avoid the X-Bow in the first stage.
- Conversely, placing the X-Bow on the first stage can influence what attackers will choose for the first stage, and consequently what they will have to attack the second stage if they make it there. This, however is generally only relevant at higher trophy levels, where attackers are more likely to have multiple different troops upgraded to a competitive level.
- There should be at least a 2 tile gap between the X-Bow and any building on the outside of the base to help protect it against Electrofire Wizards, which can chain their lightning across one tile gaps.
- Because the X-Bow is incapable of targeting both ground and air at the same time, do defend it with complementary defenses depending on the mode set for it. When set to ground mode, some aerial coverage should be afforded, and vice versa.
Offensive Strategy
- The X-Bow is not a major threat if it is facing a tank troop on its own, since it has the second-lowest DPS of any single-target defense, ahead of only the Archer Tower in long range mode. This does not mean it should be ignored completely (unless it cannot target the troops that are being used); because of its long range, it can pile up lots of damage over a period of time if one is focused on taking out other defenses.
- Against long-range units, the X-Bow should be watched out for, because it easily outranges them all even through their niche. Beta Minions and Cannon Carts will be quickly destroyed, while the Battle Copter will be weakened by a prolonged encounter with the X-Bow.
- If the X-Bow is connected to a building on the edge of the base via 1 tile gaps, you can use Electrofire Wizards in Electro Mode to damage it.
- Note that the Electrofire Wizards can only chain through 3 buildings before hitting the X-Bow, keep this in mind when planning your attack. Because of the X-Bow's high hitpoints, chain damage on its own is unlikely to destroy the X-Bow, especially if the X-Bow is hit late into the chain.
- In order to avoid damage from the X-Bow, you can use troops that the X-Bow cannot target, for example, if the X-Bow is set to ground, favor using air troops, and if the X-Bow is set to air, favor using ground troops.
Upgrade Differences
- X-Bows undergo significant visual changes at all levels. Their upgrade differences mostly correspond to X-Bows in the Home Village of equal level.[1]
- When initially constructed, the X-Bow consists of a huge crossbow-like structure mounted on a base made of light-colored wood with a stone axle and a black, gear-shaped rim being riveted on it. It has small black stone on the corners of the stone foundation. When set to target air, the box gains wings at the rear.
- At level 2, the X-Bow base is replaced with normal wood, the gear is gilded. The stone foundation turns black and gold spike replaces the black stone on the corners.
- At level 3, the X-Bow base is replaced with wood dyed black, the axle is now gilded, the gear is black once again but still has gold rivets. The stone foundation has a slightly deeper shade of black and bigger and sharper black spikes replaces the gold spike.
- At level 4, the X-Bow base becomes a blue wheel with a gray axle, a golden octagonal rim with gold plating on each angle replaces the gear. The stone foundation is now made of rough gray rocks, the tip of the spikes glow a brighter blue than its base.
- At level 5, the X-Bow base's wheel turns gray, the golden rim becomes bigger that its gold plating on the sides now goes into the ground, its inner surface turns black. The stone foundation is now covered with a blue casing, complete with a metal band around it, there are more small spikes at the edges of the foundation with the main one becoming more pronounced, the glow comes from the base of the spikes.
- ↑ It uses hemp rope instead of a straight string, there are hemp ropes on the bow around the barrel, the ends of the bow are covered with metal, the small box where it would housing the elixir is light blue. The small gears on the base are shinier, and at level 4 and beyond the palette is blue instead of red. Instead of tilting the X-Bow upward for Ground & Air Mode, the entire X-Bow is raised for Air Mode.

Trivia
- The X-Bow, along with the Walls, Army Camps and Archer Towers are the only Builder Base buildings that have the same name but have a different design than their Home Village versions.
- This is likely due to the fact that the tower itself has a system where it can be set into different set of modes and adding cohesion to the steampunk theme.
- The Builder Base X-Bow and Builder Archer Tower are the only defensive buildings in Builder Base that have two modes.
- The Builder X-Bow shoots slower than its Home Village rendition, firing once every 0.192s compared to 0.128s.
- The X-Bow is one of three defenses and traps in Builder Base that can be "lifted" to switch to air mode, the others being the Mine and Mega Mine.
- It is the only defense in the Builder Base to do so.
- The X-Bow is the only defense in the Builder Base to have only 5 total levels. In spite of this, it does not start at a higher level to match the max levels of other units of its type, unlike with Builder Base Troops and the Battle Copter.
